Salford City College named top performing college in Greater Manchester

A Salford college has been named as the top performing General Further Education (GFE) college in Greater Manchester.

Students celebrate their school being one of the top ten further education colleges in the country

Salford City College (SCC) gained a success rate of 88.6% in the Government's recently released national success rates tables.

The success rates are a measure of how many students completed and passed their course, based on 16-18 year olds in the 2013-14 academic year.

John Spindler, CEO & Principal of SCC, said: "Our students have consistently achieved a 99% A-Level pass rate and 100% Advanced Vocational pass rate.

"We are also renowned for our outstanding performing arts department and are particularly proud of the newest developments at our FutureSkills centre at MediaCityUK which features industry standard facilities such as a TV studio and media makeup suite.

"I believe that the continued success of SCC is all thanks to our dedicated staff, including the programme team who are vital in keeping the students on track with their studies.

"Our students also benefit from exciting enrichment activities to make their time at the college both memorable and enjoyable.

"This includes regular visits from celebrity hypnotist Ian Dee, who gives entertaining hypnotism sessions to help relieve students of stress around the exam period.

"Everyone at the college is absolutely delighted with our success rates.

"Going forward, we will continue to strive to further increase these results."

This incredible success means the college is also in the top ten further education colleges in the country.

SCC was formed through the merging og five colleges and offers A-Level and vocational courses, ranging from Space Engineering to Media Makeup.

Pendleton, Eccles, Walkden and City Skills Sixth Form Centres, along with FutureSkills at MediaCityUK, joined forces to create the 'supercollege'.

Salford City College have their own YouTube channel where a range of videos are uploaded

Student Governor Joe Dewhurst, 17, from Atherton, said: "I chose to study my A-Levels at SCC because of its excellent reputation for outstanding results and its broad range of subjects.

"I am now in my second year at Pendleton Sixth Form Centre and am delighted to have been offered a place to study Mathematics at Oxford University based on my predicted grades."

The college has achieved much success recently, having been awarded the Association of Colleges (AoC) Beacon Award for Sport in the Curriculum last year.

Students completed 11,160 qualifications at the college in the last academic year with vocational students achieving on average a Distinction in their qualification.

There are 218 GFE colleges in the country, ten of which are in Greater Manchester.
