WATCH: 5 Tin Nomination Goes Viral in Salford

A NEW kind of viral campaign has launched in Salford, in a hope to crackdown on food poverty in the area.

The nomination process has taken over social media and sees people donating five tins of food to their local food bank and then nominating three of their friends to do the same.

The idea comes from the success of other campaigns such as the ice bucket challenge and the no makeup selfie phenomenon.

Simon Williams, a Salford born radio DJ, came up with the idea after taking to the streets with local charity Coffee 4 Craig and seeing the poverty in the area.

He said: “I saw what the poverty was like and found it shocking. I knew I had to do something about it and that’s when I came up with the campaign.”

Coffee 4 Craig supports the homeless community in Manchester by offering street kitchens up to three times a week and a shelter to get people back on their feet.

The charity was set up in honour of Craig White, who passed away living on the streets last year.

His sister, Risha Lancaster and her wife Fie now help homeless people in Manchester in order to make sure everyone is given a second chance.

They hope to become the first emergency homeless shelter in Salford on 21st December, just in time for Christmas.

The five tin challenge has taken off and is now used around the UK, Coffee 4 Craig couldn’t be happier with the support they have received.

Liam Hickson, who once found himself on the streets after a failing relationship, can’t thank the charity enough for the help they have given him.

He said: “When I was kicked out, I had nothing but the clothes I stood up in. I went to the police, who told me I’d have to wait a couple of nights for accommodation which I found shocking. Coffee 4 Craig took me in, gave me a home and now I help other people who are in need find their feet.”

Greater Manchester has some of the worst statistics in the UK where food poverty is concerned.

Coffee 4 Craig hope to tackle these figures and stamp out food poverty for good.
