WATCH: Paul Heaton gathers food donations for local food banks

PAUL Heaton, former lead singer of Beautiful South, has collected generous food donations from fans at his recent gig.

The gig-goers were asked to bring non-perishable food items to his gig at the Academy 2 with Jacqui Abbott last Friday (December 12).

The benefit gig was organised by charity, Hope Not Hate who ‘want to show solidarity to people who stand up to things like racism, poverty and hunger’.

The food has been donated to two local charities, Compassion in Moss Side and also Bury-based, Porch Boxes.

The chair of Porch Boxes, Julia Rowland said: “One of the best parts is that somebody as massive as Paul Heaton can see something as tiny as us and think we are worth his time.”

Manchester band, The Courteeners have also contributed £1000 to be shared between both charities, with plans to see some of the money poured back into their hometown of Middleton.

The organisation believes that the 4,500 donations from Friday night will go towards feeding hundreds in the area of the Christmas period.

During the festive season, PorchBoxes create ‘Christmas Hampers’ which include treats such as a selection box and mince pies as well as ‘normal’ items such as tins of beans and pasta.
