WATCH: Single mum opens shop she won in a competition

A SINGLE mum from Sale Moor opened a top trend handbag shop at Stretford Mall after she won a competition for budding entrepreneurs.

Her prize is a unit at the busy Stretford shopping hub free from rent, rates, insurance fees and service charge for six months.

Tracey Gibbons, 33, launched her business earlier this year after the relationship with her partner broke down.

The mum of two started selling bags on social media but she always wanted to open her own shop.

She said: “It gives me a boost of confidence. I can’t even put it into words of how happy and thankful I am for this opportunity.”

Tracey was one of three shortlisted from more than 20 applicants who entered the Dragon’s Den style contest.

Trafford councillor Michael Hyman, who was on the judging panel, said: “The presentation she made to win the competition really impressed me and persuaded me that this was going to be a successful and viable business.

“I wish her good luck and every success in her new venture.”

Craig Topping, Stretford Mall Duty Manager, said the initiative was a good way to fill the empty units at the shopping centre.

“It makes sense to run a competition like this for the community, to give people the opportunity to get in while we have the space.”

Tracey’s shop, “The girl for Bags”, specialises in the latest bag fashion trends at affordable prices.

Some of the handbags feature on television programmes and can be seen in celebrity magazines.

Bill Mather, a local shopper, also welcomed the idea: “To give these people the opportunity to establish these small businesses is very good.

“Having gone through a period of a lot of empty shop units, it’s really starting to lift up the place.”

The businesswoman will also receive free marketing and PR support from the management team at Stretford Mall.
